Signs the Humidity in Your Home is Too High

High humidity is an issue that occurs mostly in commercial venues where there is something happening to cause the high levels. However, it’s also possible to have high humidity in your home. This high level of moisture may cause any number of problems, including water damage where condensation builds up and drips down a wall, wood rot, and mould growing in rooms.

Not sure if your humidity is too high? You can always buy a device to check, but here are some of the usual signs that you need to turn on the air conditioner or otherwise dehumidify your home.

Window Condensation

There are two reasons condensation will build up in your windows. First, if you have high levels of moisture in the air in your home, it’s quite likely to end up with condensation dripping down the windows.

It’s also possible that your windows are not well sealed and the condensation comes from humidity outdoors. Look carefully to see where it’s forming, between the panes or on the inside of the window.

Mould

If you notice mould growing on walls, books, or other areas, it’s a sign there is too much humidity. This is most likely to occur in the bathroom, particularly if you don’t use a ventilation system to expel humidity after a shower or bath.

Stains from Water

You may see damage from water on your walls or ceiling. This is often due to an actual leak, rather than just humidity, but it can rapidly turn into a nightmare. As soon as you notice the issue, examine the area and find the cause. There may be a pipe in the wall or ceiling that has a leak, and it will need to be fixed immediately.

Water stains below a window may be from condensation dripping down. This can also cause wood rot and encourage pests.

Musty Odours

It’s often possible to smell mould before you actually find it. The humidity may affect papers, books and even clothing, causing it all to smell mouldy and unpleasant. These odours often cause stuffy noses and allergies in people living in close proximity to the mould, so it should be treated immediately.

Humid Air

Are your clothes sticking to your skin or do they feel perpetually damp? You may notice that the air just feels humid, even if you haven’t yet noticed any mould, mildew, or condensation. If this is the case, you’ll need to start taking action.

How do you treat humidity? You can run your heater or your air conditioner to help dry things out, or you can invest in a dehumidifier. Proper ventilation is also very helpful.
