The Importance Of Replacing Your Old Boiler

You’ve likely heard that you should replace a boiler that is over a decade old, but is it really necessary? If your boiler is still functional, you may prefer not to worry about it and wait. However, this will end up costing you more in the long run, even if your boiler is perfectly functional at the moment. There are a few reasons to replace an old boiler and while it may not be an urgent thing if you need to save up money first, it is definitely high on the list of priorities.

More Expensive

This is a fact. When boilers age, they not only lose efficiency but new models of boilers are designed to be more efficient. This means that a 15-year-old boiler could end up losing nearly half its efficiency and that is a whole lot of energy your boiler is wasting. You’re essentially paying for heat and hot water that you don’t even get to use.

Complicated Repairs

If your boiler does need a simple repair, it may be nearly impossible to find the parts you need. As older boilers become decrepit and are no longer used, the parts are not made for them. You could end up waiting for months on a part to come from somewhere else. In addition, they tend to be a lot more expensive because they are so rare.

System Failure

If your boiler is over a decade old, how old are the pipes and radiators that it runs? These are even more likely to wear down and become corroded over time. It’s frustrating to have a working boiler and then discover that the pipes are leaking. The water damage alone can cost a lot of money and cause damage to your home. It’s important to check all systems, even if the boiler is still in good condition.

Take Up Space

The older your boiler is, the more space it takes up. You may find that you could use that space for something else. More and more people install their new, more compact, boilers in lofts or the attic to provide more space in the more commonly used spaces of the home. While this may not be a reason to replace your boiler now, it will help you make the decision when it comes time.

Older boilers can be useful still, but in most cases, they are simply not as efficient as today’s models. It’s best for your pocketbook and the environment to look into purchasing a new one. Contact Mitchell’s if you’re in the market for a new boiler.
