As we enter the warmer summer months, many of us will rely on air conditioning to stay cool and comfortable. A reliable air conditioning system is particularly important if you work in an office or retail workspace, so what do you do if your air conditioner breaks?
Recognising the small warning signs is the best way to catch any issues before they escalate, so you can get the repairs you need. Don’t wait until your system completely breaks down, if you recognise any of the warning signs below, call an engineer as soon as possible.
Water leakage
Air conditioners use refrigerant to cool the surrounding area and they may produce condensation as they operate. However, a pool of water or water droplets from your air conditioner indicates that the drain line is clogged with dust, dirt or sludge. Water leaks can cause damage to the surrounding walls or floor, so contact an engineer asap.
Strange noises
Air conditioners may produce a quiet buzz or hum but they shouldn’t make loud banging, screeching or squealing noises. If you’ve noticed an unusual noise (or a noise that’s louder than usual), this could indicate a broken or malfunctioning part. You could also have an issue with your compressor or a part that needs replacing.
Warm air
Some air conditioners produce hot and cool air, so check the thermostat first to make sure it’s on the right setting. If you switch to cooling mode but the problem persists, you may have a compressor issue or blocked air filters.
Poor airflow
Poor airflow is often caused by dirty or blocked air ducts, so your unit may just require a good clean. If that doesn’t work, you could have a clogged air filter or broken motor. Insufficient airflow is a drain on your energy usage and no one wants to pay high energy bills if the unit isn’t working properly!
