Want To Install A New AC System? Here’s What You Need To Know

Getting an air conditioning installation is a major decision, both for homeowners and firms. Not only does it require significant investment, but it also needs management, too.

In this post, we explore everything you need to know about installing a new air conditioning unit on your property.

You’ll Need A Professional

Air conditioning installation isn’t something you can do yourself. Rather, you’ll need qualified and accredited installers to do it for you. These professionals ensure that your system is properly sealed (so that it doesn’t leak air) and complies with all relevant building codes.

Professionals can then give you a regular AC maintenance schedule. Typically, they come once per year to service your system so that it operates reliably well into the future.

Your New Unit Will Last Around 10 Years

AC design has come a long way in the last 10 years. Even so, most units will only last around 10 to 15 years with proper maintenance.

The reason for this is the degradation of the internal components. Over time, units become damaged, similar to car engines. And eventually, you get to the point where they go beyond economical repair.

With that said, 15 years is a good run. And if you do need to replace your unit, you don’t always have to replace the ducting, which is one of the largest cost components of the installation.

There Are Many Different Types Of Air Conditioning Units

Air conditioning units come in several varieties.

The simplest are wall-mounted units. These slot into holes in your walls (or windows in areas that allow it), and extract warm air into the outside environment. These don’t usually have any ducting at all and simply cool individual rooms,

Central air conditioning is different. These are much larger and usually have both an exterior unit and an air handler. The units work together to pump cool air into your rooms, displacing hot air which exits via return ducts and is extracted outside. These units tend to be significantly more expensive to run because they cool the entire home, not just a small area.

You May Need To Get Your Unit Repairs

After the first couple of years, you may need to call out AC repair services. Air conditioning units have components that can fail fast, such as the compressor or heat exchanger.

Every AC System Has An Energy Star Rating

Energy Star ratings identify the efficiency of your AC unit. It tells you how much cooling action you get for each unit of electricity the equipment consumes.

Lower-rated units tend to be cheaper upfront, but they often wind up costing more in the long run. Bills are higher, and they may not qualify for tax or utility rebates.

All Filters Have A Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value

Lastly, filters on your unit have a minimum efficiency reporting value or MERV. The higher this number is, the smaller the airborne particles your AC unit can remove from the air. Liking what you hear? Consult the professionals at Mitchell’s.
