What is a HVAC System and Why Does Your Hotel Need One?

You may have heard the term HVAC being thrown around in place of air conditioning (it is a common system used in many buildings nowadays, afterall), however there is a difference between them. We’ll go on to explain exactly what they are, as well as their uses in a commercial environment – specifically hotels.

Keep reading to learn all you need to know about HVAC systems.

What Are They?

Let us first start by defining what HVAC means; HVAC stands for Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning. So, whilst air conditioning is included in HVACs, that is not what they are exclusively used for.

Rather, they are units that control various aspects of the air quality and conditions in a room. The reason we’ve mentioned air quality is because these systems don’t simply heat up or cool down a room, but can actually regulate the quality of the air in a room as well – this is where ventilation comes in.

Ventilation

A specially designed air inlet allows air to flow into the mechanism, whereby it goes through filters to remove dust, allergens and any other particles in the air that may be irritants or affect its quality, wherever it is needed most. It is then removed through a number of ducts and directed back outside where the air will be recycled.

The humidity levels in the air can also be controlled in this way.

Air Conditioning & Heating Systems

Contrary to what many believe, an air conditioning unit can both cool and heat the air nowadays, which is especially the case for HVACs. Both the heating and cooling process happens using a heat pump.

In order to cool your room down, the heat pump will take the warm air from inside and moves it to outside (rather than blowing cool air into the room, as many people may think), whilst in order to heat your room up it will do the opposite – taking warm air from outdoors and pumping it into your room (although furnaces can also be used in conjunction with this, which is especially useful if you live in a colder climate).

Benefits of HVACs in Hotels

So, now that you know what a HVAC system is and how it works, why are they good to have in your hotel?

Looking at the UK weather trends in the previous few years, we have experienced some record-breaking temperatures in this summer alone, whilst our winters still have a cold and frosty bite. This is why it is important to offer your guests the ability to both heat and cool their rooms, with the convenience of being able to do so through the use of a singular system.

Furthermore, many hotel room windows do not open (especially those on the upper floors) for safety reasons. Because of this, it is important that the air quality of all your rooms remains clean for your guests, so they can enjoy their stay without feeling or becoming unwell due to poor air or allergens that are present in it. The ventilation that HVACs offer can ensure this, so you can assure your guests that their stay will be as comfortable as they deserve and expect.
